comments: While most photographers have enthusiastically joined the digital revolution, a contingent of Asheville shooters are still clinging to a method that was mastered more than 2000 years ago. A group of local pinhole photography practioners recently coordinated a daylong pinhole extravaganza in conjunction with Worldwide Pinhole Day, an international celebration of the simplest-known camera. Attendees were invited to borrow a camera -- a photo paper-lined, light-proof box with a single miniscule hole -- and discover what the world looks like when seen through a candy box or martini shaker. (For the record, it frequently looks blurry and dark. Which may be why organizers distributed handcards urging participants to not hand-hold the camera.) As the amateur pinhole artists proved, it doesn't take fancy gadgetry to capture Asheville: They successfully chronicled front porches, sandaled feet and construction equipment -- all without the aid of a lens.
