Peru, Indiana, where Cole Porter was born, hasn’t produced too many songwriters lately. But it’s given the world countless clowns, lion tamers and high-wire acts.

Peru has been a circus town since the 1800s, when a local businessman made a deal that somehow netted him a traveling circus. By the turn of the century, many of the nation’s biggest acts were wintering in Peru, where it wasn’t uncommon to encounter ladies with beards and men with extra arms.

The circuses long ago left Peru, but its legacy endures in the form of an amateur youth circus that the town mounts every summer. The Circus City Festival dates back to 1960, when retired performers decided the town’s children should have the chance to ride elephants and walk the tightrope. “Circus” is still the most popular extracurricular activity in Peru.
