comments: As generations of American vice-presidents have confirmed, there’s no guaranteed glory in the post. But every person who holds the position is promised a spot in Huntington, Indiana’s Vice-Presidential Learning Center, the only museum anywhere dedicated to celebrating the nation’s second-in-command. Not that there’s much to celebrate: Vice-presidents, many of whom were appointed to their posts in recognition of their lifetimes of service, have a tendency to die before their term’s up. Until Walter Mondale came along, vice presidents didn’t even merit an office in the White House. “My country has in its wisdom contrived for me the most insignificant office that ever the invention of man contrived,” John Adams grumbled to his wife Abigail.
The museum doesn’t mind playing favorites: The whole of the second floor is devoted to native son Dan Quayle, who – for many Americans – remains the quintessential veep. posted: 06/29/2009 11:03 AM by: tetley
