One of the best parts about Tammy's: this pig statue on the counter!

The back-roads of upstate New York can be treacherous culinary territory--for a ravenous traveler, a fast-food chain sometimes seems like the only option. That's why, on trips to Vermont along Route 7, I thank my lucky stars for Tammy's Candy Kettle. An old farmhouse sitting quite close to the road, Tammy's boasts great burgers, ice cream, and fudge on it's hand-painted signs. Inside it's part dessert shop, part restaurant, and part general store with baskets, dried flowers, and woodwork in the back room.

Tammy's menu is a vast sampling of traditional American favorites, from burgers and sandwiches to homemade soups and chili. They have the best BLT I've ever had in my life: no fancy-pants foodie can make a better sandwich than one with crispy bacon, real mayonnaise, and buttered-and-griddled rye bread. Tammy's stands out because it's not trendy or gimmicky. The owners could certainly employ the gamut of locavore vocabulary that jaded city-folk adore, but instead just keep doing what they're good at: making inexpensive, delicious home-cooked food for hungry people.

Beyond the shop and restaurant, Tammy's is also a farm with a pumpkin patch and massive corn maze in the autumn. There's even a fall festival with bluegrass music and a pumpkin slingshot! But in the meantime, if you find yourself betwixt Albany and the Green Mountain State, hold out for Tammy's: it'll be well worth it.
